Creek Housing

The river slums

One of my heaviest experience happened last weekend while visiting the slums along a dirty creek here in Quezon City.

Initially I wasn't planning to go inside these tunnels that connect all the small mainly wooden structures along the banks of a creek. In Metro Manila many people live like this. Therefore it was always on my list to go to, however I never liked the idea of just walking inside. There is always a risk factor as a foreigner.

To open up with the locals I brought our Labrador dog along; Saga. She, our dog, is a sweety and very easy going with her 9 years, half of those years she spent here in the tropics. She gets so much attention as large dogs are rare especially if they are trained. So she is my ice breaker. It works always very well.

To make a longs story short I had a long scroll together with many kids. Evelyn a young girl took me along. Wonderful. The pictures should speak for itself....

This side is San Juan city. Crossing the tiny walk-bridge will bring you into the rive side slums in Quezon City.

My proud guides.

Just outside the slums. Saga has many freinds.

Joyful

The rich have often no style
and misbehave, I observed.

Dish and clothes washing. No maids here to assist.
Children are very respectful I noticed.

Saga, our sweet ice breaker.

So many people, complete families live here.

Not having much, materialistic wise. But having each other and fun.

Will there be light at the end of the tunnel?
